Russia’s Pressure on the Balkans Increases
The fortunes of Europe have always been intertwined with developments in the Balkans. The most famous episode (the killing of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in Sarajevo, which triggered WWI) is just an example. Just as the European Union seems destined to dis-integration and the wider European geopolitical space to further fragmentation, observing developments in the Balkans seems imperative at this stage. In this piece of analysis we discuss the economic and geopolitical influence that Russia is exerting on the region, and its repercussions for the European integration process.
