Italy Fast Running Out of Political Options, Europe Fast Running Out of Political Future

Following Renzi’s defeat in the constitutional referendum, Italy will probably have a new government in place relatively soon in charge of reforming the electoral law and stabilising the banking system. This government could last until mid-2017, or longer, but the medium-term political outlook is more relevant. In this paper, we discuss how the Italian political system will likely evolve in the next few months, and how the EU is embarking on a path that could lead to its eventual dissolution if no additional political capital is invested in the integration process.
